CHS TAKES SECOND IN SCHOLAR BOWL SECTIONAL-Columbia High School took home the second place trophy in the Class 2A Greenville Scholastic Bowl Sectional Tournament. Carbondale won first place. ICS grads include Ryan Richter, Sam Olsson, and Ryan Steppig starred!

help Gibault win against Cahokia.
Julianna Hollman, member of the JV Bowling Team, who had a high game of 150, along with a high series of 408 to help Gibault win against Lebanon.
Nick Helm bowled 201 and 200 games to help the Varsity Bowling Team beat Cahokia.

Catherine Ulivi, ICS class of 2010, former member of the ICS Tech Club, helped out during her Freshman year at Nerinx. Her teacher suggested that Catherine start a Tech Club at Nerinx. This year she did. She got about 20 helpers she was appointed President. This year she entered a drawing in the 100 Neediest Cases and was one of the artists selected to have her drawing published in the St. Louis Post. It will be in the newspaper sometime over the holidays. In math, Catherine was able to excel and in her Freshman year she took Geometry Honors. This year, she has been raised up to Advanced Pre-Calculus Honors and is holding an A+. She is the only Sophomore in that class. Besides all this, Catherine is still playing clarinet in the Nerinx Jazz Band and continues to play guitar, bass, and keyboard and is the Head of the Lighting for all 5 of the productions so far!

WHERE IN THE WORLD? NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY WEEK. We are one of the few schools in the area that offer 2 years of geography to our students. Drew Buser, ICS Class of 1995, was named Chief Operating Officer of Deutsche Bank on Wall Street this week. Drew’s dad Steve (former School board president and founder of the ICS/Joe Hoguet Golf tourney) asked him what lead him to this point. Drew said ‘Geography with (retired ICS legendary teacher) Mrs. Marge Krizan”.

I would have to rate X his "Razorback Attack" video footage to the Travel Channel for "When Vacations Attack" which should air in December this year and also to the Discovery Channel for a special in the spring. Scared the willies out of me when that boar got a tusk anchored in one of the hunter’s legs. I did learn I did not want to hunt feral pigs!
Gibault senior Steven Souchek has been named the Class1A Golf Player of the Year. Steven has earned many titles over his four years at Gibault including a 2nd place state finish last year. He will begin his college career at John A. Logan College in Carterville and major in business management. Congratulations Steve, we are very proud of you!

Jessica Altadonna, Blake Braun, and Michael Lesko participated in the State Math Competition this past weekend at University of Illinois. Michael placed 31st out of 143 competitors in Geometry.
Jacob Lundy, Molly Diehl, Mark Young, Madi Scace, Libby Spurgeon, Karli Larson, Millie Wolz, Emma Burns, Kate Fletcher, Martin Witges, Alex Dickinson, Nathan Schmidt, Lizzy Raisch, Julianna Hollman, Megan Huether, Natalie Loless, Grace Raisch, Allie Farr, Claire Buchheit, Colin Juengling, Yosh Orlet, Gabe Pelate, Alex Raisch, Blake Braun, Caleb Weiler, and Jacob Weilerall did an fantastic job in the recent Gibault Musical, “Bye Bye Birdie”.
Alex Dickinson was part of all 3 Track Relay Teams: 4 x 800, 4 x 400, and 4 x 200 who broke records. Alex Raisch and Nathan Schmidt was also part of the 4 x 200 Relay Team who broke the record. Nathan Schmidt also ran his best time, seconds off the school record placing 6th in the 1600 Meter Run, and Alex Raisch placed 8th in the 100 Meter Dash. This was at a 7 school track meet with 2 entries per event from each of the other schools participating.
Jacob Lundy’s essay ranked 2nd and won $300. This was out of 158 non-fiction entries. Olivia Hollman's poem won 3rd prize and $100. This was out of 205 poetry entries. Both of these students entered the “High School Writers’ Contest Banquet” in SIU-Edwardsville.
Nathan Schmidt and Alex Dickinson were part of the Boys Track 4 x 800 Relay Team who broke the school record again with a time of 9:10 placing 1st in the event. Nathan and Alex also placed 2nd for the 4 x 400 Relay Team. Alex helped the 4 x 200 Relay Team place 3rd. Nathan placed 3rd in the 1600 Meter Run. Olivia Hollman broke 2 records, the 100 Meter Hurdles with a time of 19.84 and the 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:02.25. Olivia placed 2nd in both of these events. She also placed 6th in the 100 Meter Dash. Alex Raisch was part of the Boys Track 4 x 200 Relay Team who finished 3rd. He also placed 4th in the 100 Meter Dash. Four teams competed at this meet: Columbia, Dupo, Lebanon, and Gibault.
Olivia Hollman broke the record again in the 110 Hurdles with a time of 19.5. Nathan Schmidt was part of the 4 x 800 Meter Relay Team who took 8th place out of 19 teams participating at the Sparta Buzz Bradley Invitational Track Meet last Friday.
Michael Lesko had winning Tennis singles matches to help the Boys’ Tennis Team win 2 out of 3 matches at the Triad quad meet. Yosh Orlet, Jacob Weiler, Colin Juengling, Caleb Weiler, and Evan Wessel all were part of double teams with victories to help Gibault come in 2nd place behind the host, Triad.
Olivia Hollman received 3rd Place in the Patriotic Art Awards.
Colin Juengling, Kate Fletcher, and Natalie Loless are three of the seniors who have been elected to this year’s Prom Court.
Olivia Hollman placed in all four of her events in a recent track meet in Red Bud in which 6 teams participated. She placed 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles, breaking the record for the second time with a time of 1:03. She also broke the record for the second time in the 110 hurdles with a time of 20.56.
Michael Lesko, Caleb Weiler, Jacob Weiler, Colin Juengling, Yosh Orlet, and Evan Wessel had wins in the Boys’ Tennis Team recently defeating East Alton-Woodriver and Metro-East Lutheran to win two of three matches.
Johnny Pratl and Brian Timmermann (each were on a team of 2 from Gibault) placed in the top 5 out of 19 presenters in the Allsup Elevator Pitch Competition at SWIC this past Monday evening. Each of their teams received $500 cash award for their winning ideas!
Nathan Schmidt and Alex Dickinson were part of the Boys Track 4x800 Relay Team who broke the school record with a time of 9:15.99 placing 1st in the event. Old record was 10:53.54. Eight schools participated at the track meet in Chester on 3/27/12. These same 4x800 Relay Team also took 1st in the Track meet at Red Bud on April 3rd.
Nathan Schmidt placed 1st in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:22 and finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12 in the 8 school Track meet in Chester. He also placed 1st in the 800 meter run, placed 1st in the 1600 meter run, and was part of the 4x400 team who placed 1st at a recent Red Bud Track meet.
Alex Raisch placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash. He broke the school record -- old record was 12.17, new record is 11.98 at the recent Red Bud Track meet.
Olivia Hollman placed 2nd in 110 Hurdles with a time of 21.25. She broke the school record – old record was 21.31. She took 1st place in the 300 meter Hurdles and set the record at 1:07.49. She also placed 5th in the 200 meter dash at the Red Bud Track meet.

Katie Lamack scored a soccer goal and Rachel Kuerz had an assist to help the Gibault Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team in a recent game against Notre Dame.
Nathan Schmidt finished 1st in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:19 and he placed 2nd with a time of 14.98 for the Track Team last Friday.
Olivia Hollman finished 6th in the 200 meter dash with a 14.98 time. She also ran the 200 and 400 meter dash to help support the Track Team last Friday.
Michael Lesko, Evan Wessel, and Caleb Weiler all were match winners for the Boys’ Tennis Team in the Belleville East Tennis Tournament this past Saturday. The team won 2 out of 3 matches.
Martin Witges and Alex Dickinsontied for 3rd in individual testing in Chemistry to help the WYSE Team capture the Sectional title at McKendree University. Yosh Orlet, Angela Vieth, and Olivia Hollmanwere also part of the WYSE team. The team competed against schools with 300-700 students, and nudged out Nashville by 4 points for 1st place, with Carlyle, Sparta, Freeburg, Breese Central, and Red Bud filling out the division. STATE BOUND!! The Gibault WYSE Team captured the Sectional title at McKendree University for the first time since 2009.
Natalie Loless, Karli Larson, Emma Burns, and Millie Wolz are members of the Women’s A Cappella Group who received a 1st place rating at the annual IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest.
Yosh Orlet and Olivia Hollman are members of the Varsity Scholastic Bowl Team who placed 4th in the semifinals in the Masonic Tournament in Piasa. They won 3 out of 4 games, defeating Bunker Hill, Mount Olive, and Lincolnwood. Yosh was Gibault’s top scorer at the tournament.
Eddie Schorn won 1st in Ceramics; Madi Scace placed 2nd and Allison Farr placed 5th in Painting; Jacob Lundy placed 5th and Kaitlyn Meyer received an Honorable Mention in Mixed Media. These students participated in the annual Art Du Jour Contest, which is a competition of all high schools in Randolph and Monroe Counties.
Johnny Pratl of the Men’s Varsity Basketball Team won in the Regional 3-Point Competition and is now advancing to the Sectional 3-point Competition. Good Luck to him!
Jessica Altadonna, Michael Lesko, and Blake Braun were 3 of the 5 member Sophomore Math Team who placed 1st in Geometry at the ICTM Regional Math Competition at SIUE. Jessica placed 1st as an individual while Michael and Blake tied for 3rd. Jessica Altadonna was part of a 2 person Freshman/Sophomore team who placed 2nd. Blake Braun and MichaelLesko were part of the Junior/Senior Team who placed 2nd. Michael Lesko with only 2 other teammates placed 1st for the Freshmen/Sophomore team. Jessica Altadonna and Blake Braun (along with one other student from Gibault) placed 1st for the Calculator Team. All members qualify for the State competition to be held on Saturday, May 5th at University of Illinois.
The art department is very busy this Spring. Students will be exhibiting their work at the following places. Nathan Schmidt placed 20th overall in the Class 1A Sectionals at SIUE on Saturday. He just missed state qualification by 1 runner. A great ending to a great season!
Leah Sueme, a Sophomore on the Girls’ Cross Country Team, helped the team place 8th overall out of 21 teams competing in the Class 1A Sectionals at SIUE on Saturday.
Olivia Hollman received first place for the Waterloo Pumpkinfest Art Contest for individuals 13-18 years old. Jacob Lundy received second.

Lizzie Kuerz, Jessica Altadonna, Katie Lamack, Josh Gool, Hannah Wessel are on the Homecoming Court for the 2011-2012 school year.
Hannah Lundy, ICS Class of 2007, received the Gifts of the Holy Spirit Award on March 13, 2010 at the annual Diocesan Office of Youth Ministry Conference held at the Gateway Conference Center In Collinsville.
The award is based on Hannah’s ability to live the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and is the highest award given by the Youth Ministry. “ Hannah is a living example of Christ’s love and demonstrates the Holy Spirit’s gifts of wisdom, understanding, right judgment , courage, knowledge, reverence, and wonder and awe in His presence.” Said ICS Principal Mike Kish.
Lundy is active in the Immaculate conception Youth Ministry as the president of Immaculate Conception Youth group, is active in the parish liturgical choir, is a Eucharistic Minister and is on the Youth Ministry Commission.
Hannah is currently a junior at Gibault Catholic High School in Waterloo and is the daughter of Craig and Karen Lundy of Columbia.
