At the IESA State Chess Finals, the ICS Chess Team was represented by 8th graders Thomas Herrmann and Ethan Schmersahl, 6th graders Johnny Adams and Lucas Herrmann, and 5th grader Spencer Biske. All five students finished in the top 10 in their groups and with winning records!
The tournament has an 8th grade bracket and a 7th grade bracket, with 5 different "boards" in each bracket. In the eighth grade bracket, Thomas played board 4 and Ethan played board 5, while in the 7th grade bracket, Lucas played board 3, Johnny board 4, and Spencer board 5. There were seven rounds in the tourney, 4 on Friday and 3 on Saturday. Each game is played to checkmate and can last as long as 90 minutes.
The ICS team had an outstanding tournament with all 5 players finishing in the top ten in their respective boards. Thomas Herrmann led the way with 6-1 record, finishing in a three way-tie for first, officially taking second place out of 25 students by tie-breaking rules. Spencer Biske went 5-1-1, finishing in a two-way tie for 5th place, officially taking 6th out of 81 students by tie-breaking rules. Johnny Adams went 5-2, also finishing in a two-way tie for 5th place, officially taking 6th out of 33 students by tie-breaking rules. Ethan Schmersahl went 5-2, finishing in a 7-way tie for 5th, officially taking 8th out of 54 students by tie-breaking rules. Lucas Herrmann went 4-2-1 and finished in a tie for 7th place, and officially took 7th out of 33 students by tie-breaking rules.
It was an outstanding showing for ICS, especially given many of the schools in the tournament have 10 times the enrollment of ICS. In the final round, where we faced our toughest competition across all 5 players, the team went 5-0. In the team competition, even though we only played 2 of 5 boards in eighth grade, and 3 of 5 in seventh grade, we finished 21st of 33 schools, and 17th of 38 schools respectively. Thank you to the parents and siblings that came to cheer the students, and a very special thank you to Cyra and Matt Herrmann for the coaching! Great job to Thomas, Ethan, Johnny, Lucas, and Spencer.
