KINDERGARTEN, FIRST, SECOND and THIRD GRADE
SUBJECT: GENERAL MUSIC, MIN. TAUGHT/WK: 60 Kindergarten: 30
OBJECTIVES:
The children will be able to:
1. Improve, through review, all previous year’s objectives.
2. Recognize and name all of the notes on the Treble clef staff.
3. Recognize the musical symbols for loud and soft.
4. Perform using different articulation styles: legato, marcato, staccato.
5. Recognize and name all of the orchestral instruments.
6. Recognize and perform whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and dotted rhythms.
7. Understand the basic form of a composition: AB, ABA, Rondo, Verse/Chorus (Refrain)
8. 3 rd Grade will perform songs on a recorder from written notation.

FOURTH GRADE
SUBJECT: BEGINNING BAND MIN. TAUGHT/WK: 90
OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of first year band the student will:
1. Recognize and understand these musical terms: staff, clef signs, bar lines, measures, double bars, repeat marks, first and second endings, D.C.al Fine, whole notes, half notes, dotted half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, whole rests, half rests, quarter rests, eighth rests, pick-up notes, key signature, time signature.
2. Have a basic understanding of melody, harmony, rhythm - rhythmic patterns.
3. Correctly use techniques such as fingerings, slide positions, stickings and mallet usage.
4. Developed an embouchure relevant to their instrument in order to produce a clear, steady tone and be able to tongue and slur correctly.
5. Recognize and play all notes, including sharps and flats that have been taught, through scales, intervals, and songs.
6. Play individually, with a section, with the entire band.
7. Play their part against other parts in the band, producing a full complete sound.
8. Appreciate music and realize that being a part of band will enhance their personal and social development.
9. Perform the Concert Bb scale from memory.

FIFTH GRADE
SUBJECT: INTERMEDIATE BAND MIN. TAUGHT/WK: 90
OBJECTIVES:
The student will be able to:
1. Improve through review, all first year objectives.
2. Recognize and understand these additional musical terms, notes, and rhythms: dotted quarters-eighth note patterns, eighth rests, sixteenth notes, dotted eighth-sixteenth note pattern, 3/8 and 6/8 time signatures, alternate fingerings and slide positions, staccato, legato, enharmonic tones, D.S. al Fine, syncopation, dynamics, accent marks, basic drum rudiments.
3. Play numerous scales with full accompanying lines.
4. Change Time Signature within a song.
5. Change Key Signature within a song.
6. Play rhythmically different sections against other sections in the band.
7. Appreciate all types and styles of music, realizing that musical knowledge will enrich their lives.
8. Perform the Concert Bb scale and Chromatic Scale from memory.
9. Perform Grade 1-1.5 music.
10. Extend playing range. Flute-second octave, Clarinet-over the break, Saxophone-second octave, Trumpet-high E, Low Brass-high D.

OBJECTIVES:
The student will be able to:
1. Improve through review all Beginning and Intermediate Band objectives.
2.Spend more time on technical development: Brass lip slurs, Woodwind arpeggios, Broken chord studies, using alternate fingerings, articulation markings, fast and accurate tonguing, triplets, phrasing, finger dexterity, syncopation, crescendos, decrescendos, dynamic markings, more difficult drum rudiments.
3. Change Time Signature within a song.
4. Change Key Signature within a song.
5. Play rhythmically different sections against other sections in the band.
6. Appreciate all types and styles of music, realizing that musical knowledge will enrich their lives.
7. Have a true understanding and appreciation of music, and the self-discipline it requires to excel.
8. Perform the Concert Bb, Eb and Chromatic Scale from memory.
9. Perform Grade 2-2.5 music.

OBJECTIVES:
The student will be able to:
1. Spend more time on technical development: syncopation, crescendos, decrescendos, dynamic markings, more difficult drum rudiments.
2. Play several Percussive Arts Society Rudiments.
3. Perform a snare drum solo in drum line format.
4. Perform a multi percussion piece as an ensemble.
5. Learn proper performance techniques of a variety of percussion instruments.
6. Discover how percussion can be used melodically, harmonically and rhythmically.
7. Appreciate all types and styles of music, realizing that musical knowledge will enrich their lives.
8. Have a true understanding and appreciation of music, and the self-discipline it requires to excel.

4. Play rhythmically different sections against other sections in the band.

7. Learn Jazz phrasing and articulation.
8. Understand different Jazz styles, i.e. Swing, Latin and Rock
